Luke Witmer is a Lead Research Engineer and PhD at Greensmith, a Wärtsilä Company. He is focused on the application of statistical methods and machine learning algorithms, advancing a unified predictive algorithm library that is available across the Greensmith software ecosystem. Two key areas of application include Load and Renewable Generation Forecasting and decision making under uncertainty for Energy Storage System Control. Prior to joining Greensmith, Luke leveraged large scale data in time-series simulations for solar resource assessment and energy modeling of buildings. The algorithms that Luke and his team develop are used both in front of and behind the meter. Systems with stacked revenue streams often require a dynamic cost optimization algorithm to handle competing objectives appropriately. These algorithms optimize a set of distributed (virtual power plants) or co-located (hybrid) assets to achieve a common goal while operating within the constraints of each individual system.
